I just wanted to clear up this rumor, since friends and colleagues keep asking us if it is true. The origin was an article in Variety where the journalist speculated about “possible Nickelodeon products that could be turned into films” including our show, and a lot of other online news outlets…

More old stuff while I’m buried in new stuff. This was the rough for one of the last DVD covers I did in 2008. As usual, the rough was a lot cooler than the finished piece.

Still brutally busy, so I’m digging into the archives. This is about as far back as I can dig (10+ years), as this was one of the three color illustrations I did for our initial pitch of Avatar. This image is in the art book, but it is a little small and printed too dark, so I thought it would be cool to show it here. As detailed in the book, we gave our pitch to Nickelodeon two weeks after coming up with the idea. That was a crazy, fertile two weeks.
(I saw a couple of the notes on my dashboard for that Zuko sketch. Yes, Mike and I created Avatar in the spring of 2002, so we’ve been living with the main characters for over 10 years now, even though they didn’t hit the world stage until early 2005.)

Equestrian Tahno for the Olympics!
Drawn by Yun Hye Choi, Background Designer at Studio Mir.
From Studio Mir’s Facebook page.

This is Asami Sato as an olympic fencer from the Studio Mir page on Facebook. Perfection doesn’t even begin to describe this.
Trigger warning: mental illness.
Azula’s psychological problems are being portrayed in a way that might make people uncomfortable.

(As far as I can tell, these are actual previews. If they turn out to be fake, I’ll take them down.)
UPDATE: According to Racebending’s post, the information leaked so far has been exaggerated. (Well, obviously the pictures aren’t, since they’re from the comic.)
